How Germicidal UV Light Works

Perhaps you realize that the sun’s ultraviolet light (UV) causes painful sunburn. But were you aware that another variety of ultraviolet light can be installed to keep your home’s air clean?

The sun emits two types of damaging UV rays, UVA and UVB. These harmful rays can lead to sunburn, skin cancer, wrinkles and other signs of premature aging.

There’s another kind of UV light, referred to as UVC. While full exposure to this ultraviolet light is bad for your skin or eyes, it can safely be utilized to clean air, water and certain surfaces.

Faust Air Conditioning and Heating uses this light in several of our systems to improve air filtration in Wharton homes.

Applications for Ultraviolet Light

This precise wavelength is classified as “germicidal” as it eradicates the DNA of bacteria and viruses. When pathogens travel through this light, they eventually perish as they can’t spread.

This makes UVC light a mighty replacement to chemical disinfection. Germicidal light is used in a lot of disinfection uses, including medical laboratories and hospitals. It’s also used to clean drinking water and other liquids created in food processing.

It’s becoming more popular to freshen air in homes in Wharton. That’s because it can also eliminate common indoor contaminants including mold, mildew and bacteria. This is an added advantage for loved ones who deal with seasonal allergies or asthma.

Having Germicidal UV Light in Your House

We install a germicidal UV light within your HVAC system’s ductwork. Because the light is put within the ductwork, it makes it compatible with the majority of heating and cooling units. This also keeps its light safely housed while giving strong cleaning for your residence’s air.

Filthy air is purified in a two-step process, first moving through your air filter and then the UV light before moving throughout your residence. Even when your heat or air conditioning isn’t operating, these lights still function to keep your air, ductwork and home comfort equipment clean.

This whole-house solution is greater than a portable air purifier, which is limited to cleaning the air in a single room. Portable air purifiers also can’t freshen your ductwork or the innerworkings of your HVAC equipment. A clean HVAC system is often a more efficient one that may even run for a longer life span. And, some portable air purifiers are known for making ozone.

When thinking over buying a germicidal lamp for your home, it’s critical to select one that doesn’t make ozone. While ozone is good at getting rid of odors and chemicals, it could also irritate your lungs and lead to other respiratory symptoms.
